Adverb adalah kata keterangan. Fungsi dari adverb adalah untuk menerangkan kata kerja. Contohnya, kata slowly dalam kalimat Lucy walks slowly merupakan kata keterangan yang berfungsi menerangkan cara berjalan Lucy. Berdasarkan fungsinya, kata keterangan terbagi atas tiga: keterangan tempat, keterangan cara, dan keterangan waktu. Sedangkan berdasarkan penempatannya, kata keterangan juga terbagi atas tiga: di awal, di tengah, dan di akhir. Yuk perhatikan penjelasan berikut untuk lebih jelasnya.

 

  • Beginning (awal)

Bentuk dari adverb yang terletak diawal kalimat:

Ø  Adverb + subject + verb + (object), OR

Ø  Adverb + subject + auxiliary

e.g. Usually she walks her cat at 3 PM.

Adverb yang bisa diletakkan diawal kalimat:

  • adverb of place (sometimes) → Here lie the ruins of Macchu Picchu.
  • adverb of time (sometimes) → Yesterday you visited your mother, didn’t you?
  • adverb of frequency (sometimes) → Occasionally, my boss takes all his subordinates out to dinner.

 

  • Middle (tengah)

Bentuk dari adverb yang terletak ditengah kalimat:

Ø  Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb, OR

Ø  Subject + adverb + verb

e.g. A student may sometimes choose his or her own course.

Gili and Kili whole-heartedly gave their gold coins to Thorin.

 

Adverb yang bisa diletakkan ditengah kalimat:

  • Adverb of manner (sometimes) → The helicopter was carefully
    landed by the pilot.
  • Adverb of frequency (usually) → Kiwi fruit normally grows in a
    cold climate.

 

  • End (akhir)

Bentuk dari adverb yang terletak diakhir kalimat:

Ø  Subject + verb + (object) + adverb, OR

Ø  Subject + auxiliary + verb + adverb

e.g.  The chef sliced the fruits carefully.

Rosita is taking Master Program next year.



 

Adverb yang bisa diletakkan diakhir kalimat:

 

  • Manner adverb (usually) → The chef sliced the fruits carefully.
  • Place adverb (usually)                 → It is here!
  • Time adverb (usually)                 → You visited your mother yesterday.
  • Frequency adverb (occasionally) → Kiwi fruit grows in a cold climate normally.
